What is Community? Does this include Facebook???

Honestly I am doing some writing to figure out MY answer to that question.

According to dictionaries, wikipedia, and others opinions -"Community" includes a wide spectrum of those who officially belong. One sense of community can refer to those friendships within a certain close proximity to each other. Another drastic definition can take you all the way to those listed as your hundreds or maybe thousands of people on Facebook that you call "friends." Maybe that is your community. What do I want to call MY community? OK, so bear with me, I am processing as I write. This may be more about me getting some things out than actually waiting for the process to take place and then sharing what I learned. You get to watch me during the grueling experience. Hold on tight!

With a life as chaotic and busy as mine, and a life that is always trying to simplify, how can I adequately keep up with all of my friends. It's tough just trying to stay connected to those I live life with in my neighborhood, family, or church. So, where do I draw the line?

And that brings me to my next question..."what is friendship?" Wow, that's a tough one! I definitely have messed this one up in every way possible and will never define this one correctly (at least by my terms). But, after many terrible choices, let downs, failures, and backstabbings I have done in my past, I sure would like to do this one right (or at least 99% better)! I will never be perfect...and no friend will ever have the ability to be. We can try as hard as we may but we will fail to meet expectations. We will misunderstand. We will misread. We will make assumptions. I am guilty of this guessing game with my friends and unfortunately, I have fell victim to many false accusations about me. We just aren't perfect. So, who are these friends? Who are the ones we share our life with? When are we spreading ourselves too thin and over prioritizing by including too many and neglecting those closest to us?

My rambling is getting bad. And my questions are adding up.

The last few weeks have been terribly difficult. I have had some ups and downs. I have cried with others over their pain. And I have shed countless tears myself in the sadness and struggles going on in my own world. Do I always share this with my community? And who is my community again? Who do I hold close enough and trust? (Sorry...there goes the questions again).

Sadly, I am overwhelmed by many events over the past week that have compelled me to blog my questions and concerns. I have seen many friendships torn apart by misunderstandings which I believe happen because we have lost the true sense of community. We share info to the world via social networks in short form. We get info from "a friend of a friend." We talk...too much. We "read" into too many things. We don't ask questions. We make assumptions...ON BOTH SIDES. This has not only happened in some of my closest friends lives, but mine own as well. How do we keep these things from happening?

Unfortunately, no matter how well we play the "friend" role, I don't know that we will ever be able to fully keep these things from happening. But I bet we sure could minimize some of the issues and/or at least attempt to work things out through a loving conversation when hurt happens. Friends will always disappoint. Some disappointments are a crazy understatement. Does it have to stay disappointing? Do we need to harbor anger? Or shall we try and "figure them out" while sitting back and simply observe from a safe distance? Absolutely NOT!

People change. Communities come and go. Do you believe this? I know I do!

I have changed. Some of it brought about by nothing other than a supernatural miracle. And some changes that required hard work, prayer, and an inseparable relationship with Jesus. I have witnessed miracles in others lives. I have seen hard work done. I have seen Jesus at work. And who can deny that? Nothing is impossible!

Honestly, I am in no way in any condition to tell you what a friend should be like. I have destroyed that too many times and continue to pick up pieces and learn from my mistakes. And I can't tell you who YOUR community should be. However, let's encourage one another to love in the midst of pain. Let's be purposeful in our relationships. Let's avoid making assumptions or gossiping to get our information. Let's avoid peeking in and trying to figure someone out by social networking sites. Let's be careful of what we say that leads others to even question our motive. Let's choose our community wisely and share with those closest to us if you want to avoid controversy. Choose your words carefully. Pray, ask Jesus to help you to discern the healthiest way to get your information out there. Does it all need to be shared? Does it then need to be judged?

So, has my stance on Facebook changed? Nope! My personal opinion is still the same. I still don't have an account. And I don't need one. Now, do I still have a problem with checking out my husband's page to see "what is happening?" YES. Is it addicting? YES. Have I tried to decipher how one is "doing" by checking out their page, posts, and comments? YES MA'AM I have. Has some of my frustrations, tears, regrets, questions, come from what I see on Facebook? YES YES YES!

I know that I am not the only one. And I also know that some of you can do just fine with Facebook and not suffer the agony that I have put myself through with it. You may never spend too much time there. You may only visit pages of those you want to love and encourage. You may be one that enjoys a few jokes from time to time that are shared or read. In fact, you may have found a friend that you thought you lost years ago. Or you may be one like me that needs to stay away from it. Just be cautious of what your motive is while using social networking sites. Make conscious choices to make that "community" a safe one. Manage how much time you allow yourself to browse and talk to "friends." Be sensitive to others.

I know this post is lengthy. Remember, this is me processing and you joining in. I don't know if my opinions or questions will change drastically after time, but I am willing to be molded. I am willing to do things that are uncomfortable. And apparently willing to make others uncomfortable or upset by sharing my thoughts and convictions. But, don't forget that these are questions for me. You need to come up with your own questions and find your own conclusions based upon what the Lord is telling you in your life. However, I do like to raise awareness and concern based upon my dealings and sufferings that could help someone else. Don't ever stop asking Him to direct you and make changes when necessary.

Soooooo.... the answer to my community question...for now... I am choosing to start with my family. Family is ALWAYS first when I think of community. My home and the people here need to be the most important. After that, the community can change. I do need to reign it in at times. I need to call on the ones who love me, can challenge me (even when I don't agree), the friends who "know" me, the ones who hurt me and are forgiven, and more importantly, the ones who I have hurt and have forgiven me. I want to walk life with those who choose to make this walking worth it! I want to grow. I don't just want info. I want to LIVE LIFE with them. I want us to walk the journey of laughing, crying, learning, hurting, forgiving, growing, and LIVING!

My posts from this point forward will no longer be applied to Jarrett's FB page. I hope that if you are not subscribed and "just peeking in" through Facebook, that you would subscribe to the blog via email or RSS feed. I am not trying to make hundreds of friends through the blog. I am no longer trying to let "others" see how I am doing so their questions can be answered. I am blogging because I love it! I do want to share my life with my community. Facebook is NOT my community. However, if you are challenged or enjoy reading, feel free to subscribe. Many posts will include family pictures which may bore some of you. But many share my thoughts, groanings, and things I am learning on my journey.

Proverbs 17:17 "A friend loves at all times..."

A Day at the Strawberry Farm!

On Saturday, our family headed out towards Mt. Dora with some good friends of ours for some strawberry picking! There is nothing like getting to pick your own strawberries!

Fresh! Ripe! Red! Juicy!

STRAWBERRIES!!!

The weather was PERFECT for strawberry picking!

Annalise was a pro a picking out the brightest strawberries! Allison picked a few, but would much rather spectate, point out good strawberries, and cheer us on as we got our hands dirty :)

Abbie was having a great time and happy to show her strawberry picking talent also!

Our plat of strawberries was filling up quickly...we just couldn't stop picking with all those yummy strawberries in front of us!

After picking and paying for strawberries, we decided to picnic in the shade. The kids had a blast running around and getting some of their energy out!

After picnicning, the kids wanted to play on the playground, ride the zip line, and experience the farms hayride! So fun!

Love Josh's face here! Caught the camera right as he started to look up :)

The kids!
Unfortunately, we had 2 cameras going and I just grabbed whatever eyes would look my way. Jess may have gotten the better of these pics!

Another great day with family and friends!

Abundant Love

My friend and former pastor, Jon Dunwell, wrote the post I have attatched below on his blog a little over a week ago. I have been meaning to share this and forgot. It wasn't until today, when in my study time that I found myself needing to go back read it again. This time I had to post it! I hope it speaks to you as much as it did to me.

Challenging Another is a Challenging to Me

Morning Reading - 2 Corinthians 2:23-2:17

2:1 For I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you. 2 For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? 3 And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. 4 For I wrote to you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. (2 Cor 2:1-4)

Paul loved the dysfunctional church of Corinth. Their condition caused his heart significant pain. He was not deterred by their harsh and critical words. He continued to pursue them in spite of their personal attacks.

Instead...
He loved them.
He endured with them.
He pursued them.
He engaged them.
He ached for them.

Not an easy thing to do. Not an easy thing to live. I think of how often I give up on people.

They make choices I do not agree with and so I move on.
They attack me personally and so I dismiss them.
They take advantage of me and so I insulate myself from them.

I'm done!
I'm over it!
I'm through!

I move on.

That's not Paul. That's me.

Paul goes back for seconds.
Paul goes another round.
Paul continues.
Paul makes himself vulnerable.

For me it's often about me. That's probably why I don't always get Paul. There were other considerations for him beyond his feelings, his rights, and his comfort. I stay pretty close to home.

I focus on my feelings.
I rehearse my rights.
I look for my advantage.

Not Paul...

He loved the people.
Therefore, he continued to share his life with them.
Therefore, he continued to be a target.
And therefore, he continued to hurt.

And so as I consider Paul and the pain of the church of Corinth, I grab these operating principles for the pains of my life.

To properly challenge another, I must love them. I am not in a position to challenge another if that is in question. If I open my mouth, I must be willing to open my life. When things get painful, I must refrain from blowing the trumpet of retreat. Endurance and perseverance must be anticipated. I never have the right to choose the short game but must always be in it for the long game.

In properly challenging another, it cannot be about me. I cannot bring my offense to the table. I can only bring my love. I should anticipate an element of personal pain. And in the midst of it, I cannot afford to make it about me, my pain, or my rights.

In properly challenging another, I need to be careful! Who am I? I need to recognize my own blind spots. I cannot afford the pride of being right to get in the way. I need to readily admit I do not see all, recognize all, or understand all. I am limited.

In properly challenging another, I need to make my goal the starting of a discussion with God. It's not about conformance to my ideas. It's not about me being right. It's about encouraging another to engage God with an open mind and heart. The primary conversation that needs to take place is not between me and them but rather between them and God. I need to be careful about interposing myself into God's seat at the table. I am not God and should not presume (or allow others to presume) I am.

I need to love.
I need to endure.
I need to engage
I need to pursue.
I need to be vulnerable.

Thanks Paul for setting the example.
Thank you God for providing the resources for grace, the long game, and not everything going the way I think it should go.

Cookie Success!

After several weekends of cookie selling, Troop #1055 is officially done with Cookie Booths!

Annalise and her cousins had a great time last weekend at the Publix Booth! Our big girl has really come out of her shell at these Girl Scout events. The last few years she has sat at booths and been encouraged to smile, hold signs, and answer questions when asked. This year, I witnessed her jumping up and down announcing cookies on sale, she posed a few times in front of the table to draw in the customers, had requests to be in a picture with a buyer, and didn't want to leave the booth when her time was up! Wow, what a few years will do!

The workers!

And Allison is ready to begin her journey with the Scouts! While helping to set up the booth, I caught her a few times with signs and smiles too! Too bad she has to wait a few years :( For now, she will just have to support and cheer on her big sis!

Uncomfortable Feels Right

Crazy post title, huh? I have walked in comfort for too long. I tend to live life making others happy. Pleasing others just makes things easier, right? And then those hard roads and journeys come along. Well, guess what? I would much prefer the easier paths...you know...the ones with less bumps and ones with well marked pavement and warning signs of what is coming up next. I like to be prepared. Then, when the detour sign pops up or the bypass is in sight I can quickly take that route! Been there?

As I mentioned before, God has really been doing some overhauling in the department of priorities in my life. And the changes aren't always comfortable or convenient. Some adjustments should be ridiculously easy to make but dumb ole' me doesn't always want to change my ways. And then I may get backlash or opinions towards my shift from the way I have always done things. This is typically a difficult thing for me to handle as I don't like to upset others or answer their questions as to why I would do something so different. I am not one to be too excited about conflict or disagreement, but I do like to share what Jesus is doing in my life. My prayer is that they can see my heart and be supportive even if it is something they are not personally called to.

But, you know something cool? I am getting better at accepting the discomfort. It feels right. Crazy enough, I am praying for a little more discomfort in my life. I am asking the Father to continue to do His work in me no matter the cost. I want to be willing to change. I want to allow The Potter to mold me in His fashion, not mine and definitely not others.

There are several areas that I am asking the Lord to make clear of which path to take, what changes to implement, what to keep, and what to release. I do see more changes coming! And I am excited! So far the direction we have felt the Lord calling our family has been so refreshing!

I am tired of being comfortable. We need to be poked and prodded every now and then. Try asking the Lord to make you uncomfortable and see what happens! You may be surprised!

Troubleshooting, Tweaks, and New Blog Design!

For the last few days my blog has been doing funny things. The layout was all out of WHACK! And low and behold after much investigating I realized it was a posting mistake on my part due to a large picture upload. So, instead of saving the orignial blog template while doing some troubleshooting...
I DELETED MY BLOG TEMPLATE!
GONE!
FOREVER!
So, I have spent the last few days trying to find a new design and finally did some tweaking and creating and came up with our new template! I am so very happy at the finished product! And now that I know how to do it, Jarrett and I will be getting some new pics to update the latest upcoming news in our family! I can't wait to play around with the design to add "Baby Brightness!" We may have a new theme soon!
